How to Make a Fruit Shrub Drink

August 10, 2020

The end of summer is my favorite time of year because the fruit stands are full of fresh delicious fruit! I live right next to what locals in Northern Utah call The Fruit Highway. A short drive and I’m in produce heaven. At the moment, peaches are in season, and I feel the need to show you all how to make a fruit shrub drink using your own favorite fruits.

What is a Fruit Shrub Drink?

Also known as “drinking vinegars”, a shrub is a drink containing a mixture of macerated fruit and vinegar. Often used in cocktails, a shrub can be mixed with seltzer to give it some fizz, and some folks like to add some brandy or other liquors to the mix.

Personally, I find it to be an enjoyable way to get the healthful benefits of apple cider vinegar without the overwhelming acidic taste. You may find that some shrub recipes call for the use of distilled vinegar, but you will be missing out on the health advantages of using raw ACV (apple cider vinegar) if you do.

The Benefits of Consuming Apple Cider Vinegar

There are many benefits to consuming the fermented liquid known as raw apple cider vinegar due to the high content of acetic acid and the healthful dose of beneficial bacteria and yeast it provides. Using it in a shrub will give you all of these benefits without having to suffer through the strong taste:

  • Helps to lower blood sugar levels and better manage type 2 diabetes.
  • Kills harmful bacteria and assists the body in fighting off and preventing illness caused by pathogens.
  • Aids in weight loss
  • Contains polyphenols that reduce cell damage, preventing diseases such as cancer.
  • Prevents indigestion
  • Helps to lower blood pressure

This is not an all-inclusive list of the benefits of consuming ACV. Just be sure that you use raw, unpasteurized vinegar with the mother. Bragg’s (this is not an affiliate link) is a popular brand that meets all these requirements, but I like to make my own with this simple recipe that you can use your apple scraps to make.

When you learn how to make a fruit shrub drink, you’ll be able to get all the benefits that come along with drinking apple cider vinegar without having to suffer through the overpowering taste. Instead, you’ll get to enjoy a refreshing drink that will ensure you’ll want to have some everyday!
